Writing
We have started with parts of speech
1. Nouns - people, places or things
our focus - proper nouns - specific names of people, place and things
**for example........Mrs. Scheck, Dillard Drive Middle School and Statue of Liberty
- common nouns are regular people, place and things
**for example........teacher, school and statue
2. 4 Types of Sentences - students have a handout in their binder
1. Interoggative - asking a question (?)
2. Imperative - making a command or demand (.)
3. Exclamation - a statement using extreme emotion (!)
4. Declarative - a statement ( . )
3. 3 Kinds of Sentences - Students have this info on a YELLOW paper in their binder
1. Simple Sentences - need to express a complete thought
- need to have a subject and predicate
- are also called "independant clauses" (fancy or technical name)
2. Compound Sentences - need to have 2 independant clauses
- need to use a coordinating conjuction and a comma
- FANBOYS
3. Complex Sentences - need to have a dependant clause
- need to have an independant clause
- need to use a subordinating clause
- most generally has a comma, but does not have to
Summarizing - taking an article or text and writing a piece pointing out the main idea and key details.
- it can be a shorter version of the original article
- for example, a movie trailer is a summary for the actual movie
Main Idea - what the text is about, topic
Key Details - the details that support the topic and prove a point or get the point across
Paraphrasing - writing the text in our own words, we can quote information straight from
the text as long as we use quotations and cite the source
- but we cannot copy the information
