-equals a test grade each quarter
-students will have a project choice board (should be in the student's language arts folder) and the option of writing a written record - receive updated version on 11/2
-in quarter 2 the projects the student did in Qtr 1 are now OFF of the list, meaning they cannot be repeated- so if a student did a diarama for fiction novel in Qtr. 1, the option is not available in Qtr. 2
-projects vary in difficulty and points - written records are worth 30 points total
-the expectation is that the student completes a novel and then chooses and completes the project of his/her choice that conveys the plot in the text (following the criteria set forth in the project choice board).
-the choice board will be handed out in class and then be posted on this website
-different projects are worth different point totals based on criteria completed
-students are encouraged to plan his/her reading in the agenda to ensure meeting goals ( calendars were handed out in class as well)
-reading will be done both in class and as homework in order for each student to be successful with this test grade - the book needs to be seen both in class and journeled in the reading log or the project will not be accepted
.the first project is due, September 30 (no late projects/papers will be accepted)
3 books read and 3 projects and or written records due (only 2 written records per quarter, at least one project must be completed as well)
Homework Reading Log:
-students will be given a log starting Tuesday, Sept 6th
-the log will be due the following Friday (the expectation is that the student is reading and filling out the log each day and handing it in competed in class on Friday.
-students are expected to read at least 20 minutes or more each night
-students are allowed to read in the auditorium during smart block for his or her daily homework reading. (the student should have the log stamped for credit)
- there will be criteria necessary to show understanding and keep notes in order to fulfill his/her projects
Composition Journal :
Read for 10 minutes – focused, take yourself to the setting, be the character
-- we are going to try this Tuesday and Thursday ( everyday would be ideal, but isn't working out to well) :(
--Write for 3 minutes:
-- tell me about the setting -- I can predict..... -- I like or dislike.... -- as I've been reading, the plot has changed in that.........

--Every 2-3 weeks I will grade journals and check for finished books. When a book is finished, the student should evaluate the book and bring closure to the entries for that book. See the 40 Book Challenge entry (optional). See Reading Requirement.
Library Visits :
One per month
--Must have book(s) to check in or out again
--May check out up to 3 books
--Required to check out 1 book
--If you have missing books from another library (for example your elementary school), please see Mrs. Cassidy about this. Mrs. Cassidy will work with you so that you are able to check out and fulfill your reading goals.
--Bins will be in the hallway for delivery on your way to homeroom.
--Reminders will be given prior to the day. ;)
--If you are absent or finish your book you may visit the library during homeroom.
You must get a pass from your homeroom teacher and ask to leave before 8:10.
Grade breakdown for Language Arts:
Test and Essays - 45%

--Star - 95
--Star - 90
--Check + 85
--Check - 75
--Projects and Papers will be graded using a Rubric
--Each student will be given a rubric as soon as the assignment is given.
--Change student seat
--Speak with student in hallway (5 minute max) – Call Home
--In Teaming – Student is sent to another classroom (Student receives Lunch Detention if they receive In Teaming) – Call Home
--Student comes back and starts over at the beginning. If they act out again, a referral is written.

Tardy Policy :--
First Offense - Warning
— Second Offense - Lunch Detention – Call Home
--- Third Offense - ISS for that core class
--- Fourth Offense - ISS for 1 school day
